A company’s metrics are usually quantitative indicators of the performance of a system such as a product or business. Metric formulas are often complex in definition, and scattered across different tools through the data stack, from nested SQL statements in BI tools to scheduled cron jobs to the warehouse. This makes it difficult for an organization to oversee and govern the usage, and definition, of such metrics.

A metrics store is a centralized and governed place for organizations to store their key metrics. It is derived from an ethos of centralizing organizational knowledge: to create a repository for those within an organization to access key metrics in a repeatable way, no matter how they plan to consume them downstream.
